Function

Function follows the story of Blu, a recently activated robot, who goes on an adventure to discover his purpose in the world. Through trial and error, and a valuable discovery, Blu comes to realize that he too was designed for a specific reason and has a meaningful role to play.

My Role

For Function, I had the role of Sound Supervisor and Sound Mixer. My tasks included: keeping a close relationship with the animation team, working closely with the composer and the team of seven sound designers, conducting frequent meetings with the animation and sound team in order to ensure that we were keeping on schedule for the due date and release date of Function, mixing the final sound effects pass with the score in ProTools in order to fix any last-minute volume adjustments, panning, reverb, and automation. I also kept track of various other organizational and administrative duties.

One of the most unique tasks that I had to do while working on Function was organizing a team of six sound designers and then assigning them their own characters to work with for the whole animation. The world of Function mimics a bustling city full of various other robots performing their specific functions. In order to create a feeling of completeness and liveliness, each sound designer had to get to know and personify their unique robot. This allowed for each robot to be individualized while staying uniform throughout the whole film.
